In a heart-wrenching incident, Gabrielle Suver was sideswiped and deserted on the side of the road. Suver’s spine was fractured in three places. She broke her left tibia and fibula, fractured her patella, sternum, and scapula. Four of her ribs were broken in the accident, her liver was lacerated. She also suffered a concussion in the accident. These serious injuries are consistent with high-speed vehicle collisions involving cyclists. She endured 29 days in the hospital and spent sixteen days of intensive rehab to walk again.
The trooper assigned to Suver’s hit-and-run case promptly went on vacation. The motorist responsible remains at large.
This is not an isolated case. Niki Isaak was left with over $240,000 in hospital bills after being recklessly hit by aggressive motorcyclists during the Florida Central Classic bicycle race. Only one of these motorcyclists was charged with a citation for careless driving; the penalty drivers get for speeding or running a red light.
Florida shockingly ranks among the top states in the United States for bicycle fatalities. In 2024 alone, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles reported 207 bicycle deaths. Despite laws granting cyclists equal rights to roads as motor vehicles, enforcement is lagging, putting lives at stake every day. People like Niki Isaak and Gabrielle Suver shouldn't have to risk death just to catalyze enforcement action against negligent and reckless drivers.
